PHØNIX
We’ve changed names! Now look out for PHØNIX, and have a listen to our latest releases!
PHØNIX's music transmits warmth, from pleasant sunlight to burning flames, giving the listener references to epic adventures and American westerns. Imagine a mix of Jimi Hendrix, Terje Rypdal and Maria Kannegaard trio sprinkled with hints of Motorpsycho, ABBA and Frank Zappa. In other words, a Nordic electric rock jazz party with inspirations from the 70s!
On the 24th of March 2023, their debut album “Under the Sun” was released on Ingebrigt Håker Flatens label Sonic Transmissions Records.
This fresh trio perform blazing concerts with a desire to express love and joy through dazzling interplay, groovy riffs and epic solos. The warm radiance and the young energy make PHOENIX a band worth experiencing live.
The band consists of Emil Storløkken Åse on guitar, Jenny Frøysa on baritone saxophone and August Glännestrand on drums. All three young, up-and-coming musicians from Scandinavia with a background of studying jazz in Trondheim. Individually, they can be found in a bunch of projects, including Trondheim Jazzorkester, Superspreder, Lav Sol, Cosmic Swing Orchestra and Liv Andrea Hauge trio, and have played at festivals such as Jazzfest Berlin, Jazztopad, Øya, Oslo jazz festival and Saalfelden Jazz festival.
“This must be one of the most exciting and daring record debuts by a Norwegian band in a very long time.”
“Something tells me that son Emil has also listened a quarter or two to his dad Ståle Storløkken and Elephant9 as well - it is in these sort of landscapes that we find ourselves, but with a solid portion of originality from each of the three musicians, and especially as a collective.
Phoenix will definitely be at home in both jazz and rock clubs. There are few boundaries, lots of dynamics and intense interaction. It’s awesome!”
